It’s no secret that the web is growing by millions, if not billions of pages per day.
Did you know that 94.3% of content gets no traffic from Google?
In 2017, Ahrefs studied around two million random newly-published pages and they found that only 5.7% of them ranked in Google’s top 10 results for at least one search query within a year of being published.
In other words, a whopping 94.3% of those pages didn’t even get a single visitor from Google.
Why is it so? And how can you be among the minority that gets organic search traffic from Google?
There can be hundreds of issues that may prevent your pages from ranking well in Google, but the most important of all is the number and quality of backlinks you have to your website.
In this article, I list some of the strategies that will answer the question of “how to get backlinks to your website?”

I hate to repeat the same mantra found in almost every other SEO article, but there’s no way you can turn your back on it.
Backlinks do help you rank higher in Google! And they are one of Google’s top 3 ranking factors.
Link building scares people at once. People think of it as the hardest part of blogging.
Although it is a little difficult, it need not be if you rely on tried and tested tactics.
Here are my top 10 ways if you want to know how to get backlinks to your website:
1. Broken Link Building
What is a broken link?
A broken link is a dead link on a page. In other words, it is a link that will lead you nowhere but will render an error saying that “this page can’t be reached”. The most common example of it is “Error 404, this page can’t be found”
So broken link building is a technique where you find people who are linking to the dead page and ask them to link to your content (on the same topic) instead.
Remember, you have to create content much better than the content that was on the dead page.
Otherwise, why will the person linking the dead resource link to you?
This technique works because people who care about their website wouldn’t want their visitors to be directed to content that no longer exists.
Executing the broken link building technique
There are many ways to find dead pages with backlinks.
One easy way is to go to Ahref’s Free Broken Link Checker tool.
- Type in the domain name for which you want to find dead pages with backlinks.
- You will have a list of all the inbound as well as outbound broken links for that page.
In the below image, I searched for bloggerspassion.com
- For the purpose of broken link building technique, your focus needs to be on the inbound links.
- Look for the website under the referring page side. This is the website that you need to pitch your content to (in the image below)
In the above image, share.bizsugar.com has given backlinks to bloggerspassion.com with different anchor texts.
Note: Also note down the anchor text of the backlink as you will need to provide details of the backlink to the website owner linking to the dead page.
Now, obviously, you would want to know what type of content was there on the page which is dead now.
To do so, simply copy the URL of the dead page and head over to Archive.org, and paste the URL of the dead page.
Archive.org will let you know how many times that page was modified and you can easily see what was on that page before it became dead.
If you think that you can create something similar, then you can select one website (which you feel is right) from the Referring domain side and pitch your content to it once it goes live.
In my case of bloggerspassion.com, I would select share.bizsugar.com as the referring domain with anchor text as “Top CPM Ad Network For 2018: How To Make Money With OneClerk” (as shown in the image below) and write a better content on the topic.
Then, I would simply contact the owner of share.bizsugar.com and pitch my new content.
2. The Skyscraper Technique
The Skyscraper Technique is pretty much similar to the Broken Link Building Technique except that in the Skyscraper Technique, you don’t have to find dead pages.
Here you have to find content with lots of backlinks, create a better version of the content, then ask everyone linking to the content you improved to link to you instead.
Executing the Skyscraper Technique
You need to find pages with lots of backlinks.
- Head over to Ahrefs Free Backlink Checker Tool.
- Enter your competitor’s domain
- You will see a list of referring domains that provide a backlink to your competitor along with the anchor texts
- Head over to any page of your competitor which has a backlink and see what type of content is there.
It’s then simply a case of analyzing the content and thinking about how to improve it.
TIP: Choose only those referring domains to pitch which have a DR of 35+ as backlinks from 35+ DR websites are high-quality backlinks. Also, make sure you select a referring domain with some organic traffic. In the above image, there are websites with zero traffic. Avoid them.
Here are some ways to improve your competitor’s content:
- Correct any facts or numbers that you feel are outdated or misleading. Create your own content with updated and accurate facts. This is a good approach as no one would want their visitors to go over to an outdated or misleading piece of content.
- Write more: If your competitor has written 2500 words in the article, you should target 3000 words or more by adding additional related content.
- Go deeper: If your competitor has only explained the basics of a concept, make an attempt to explain the concept in detail. People love to read detailed content.
Make your content way better than your competitor’s and see how the linkers will want to link to you.
3. The Reverse Skyscraper Technique
The reverse Skyscraper Technique is where you find pieces of content already published on your website, find websites having backlinks to similar but low-quality content, and then pitch everyone linking to those pages to link to you instead.
For finding low-quality content having backlinks, I would suggest a tool called Ubersuggest by Neil Patel.
- Head over to Ubersuggest
- Enter a keyword that revolves around your content
- Click on the “Content Ideas” tab on the left panel
- You will get a list of websites that have written content on the keyword and also have backlinks.
- Visit these websites and look for compelling reasons why your content is better.
If you find the reasons, pitch your content to the ones linking to those pages.
To know the ones linking to a website, simply click on “Links” under the Backlinks column (as shown below). You will get a list of websites that link to the content.
4. Add A Free Tool To Your Website
Adding a free tool to your website has the potential of getting a lot of backlinks. When Neil Patel added Ubersuggest to his website, it increased his backlink count by 24,453 referring domains.
And here’s a cool thing. You can do this same exact thing to your website.
You don’t have to build a tool from scratch like Neil Patel either, you can just add one to your website for $10, or even $15 or $20.
All you have to do is go to a site called CodeCanyon where you find a tool within your industry and just purchase it, and you can just put it on your website.
In other words, you’re taking a tool someone else created, you’re buying the rights to it, and you can white label it, meaning put your own logo, your own colors on it, pop it on your website as if it’s yours, and it’ll help you generate a lot of backlinks. Sounds cool right?
CodeCanyon literally has tools from every industry, from automotive, and finance, to health. They even have SEO tools. All these tools don’t cost much.
After adding the tool to your website, all you have to do is promote it on your social media and mailing list. People don’t think twice before linking to tools, especially free tools as it helps their audience achieve their goals free of cost.

The added advantage of a tool on your website is that you can even charge people for using your tool once it gets popular. Voila! Another way to earn money from your website.

5. Guest Blogging
Guest blogging is the practice of writing blogs for other websites to be published. It’s a technique for obtaining backlinks to your website from blogs in exchange for an article.
It is also referred to as guest posting sometimes.
Links may be cited in several locations throughout the article. In the article’s body, you may include a link that is tied to a relevant word or phrase. Links are also frequently included in the author profile at the end.
If you are looking to know how to get backlinks to your website, then guest blogging may be your best bet.
How to find websites that accept guest posts?
Search for similar keywords in the search bar provided by websites that have the same niche as yours.
For example, if you are a digital marketing company, you could make a list of sites that provide digital marketing services, website development services, or other businesses that write articles on SEO and social media.
Search on their site for guest blogging opportunities by typing “write for us” in the search bar. It should take you to the right landing page.
However, if the webpage doesn’t show a search bar, you can also search on Google for the website name and “write for us” phrase. For example, for a site named abc.com, searching for “abc.com write for us” would fetch the expected results.
Check to see if there are any other guest bloggers when you read posts on some blogs.
You can make a list of several writers whose posts you frequently see on different websites.
You can find some of the other websites they have posted on by searching for their name on Google. Simply create content to write for those sites after that.
Even with all of these possibilities, there is still one more approach you can use if you run out of host websites.
You can send blog pitch emails straight to the webmaster of a site if it doesn’t seem to be accepting guest contributions. Ask them politely via email or the available contact forms.
But be ready for disappointment. Such requests are frequently made to good bloggers, and they might not even respond to you. Do not let yourself let down. Continue to pitch to several websites. The worst-case scenario is that they reject you. It won’t hurt to give it a shot.
6. Using Google Search Console
You may also use Google Search Console to look for opportunities to get links pointing to your website. You can use the incredible data provided by the free Google tool to improve your rankings.

The Links Report is one of the tools. These are websites that previously linked to your website. You can look through the backlinks to find out what kind of content the people who provided you with links enjoyed.
They are already familiar with your website because they have connected to it before, so they might add another backlink. All you have to do is find sites and reach out with relevant content.
7. Help A Reporter Out (HARO)
Because journalists are asking for your comments rather than the other way around, it’s a simple way to obtain high-quality backlinks.
To use HARO, first register as a source on the website, then choose a pricing option (you can use the free basic plan to get started).
After you join up, HARO will start sending you emails with requests for guidance, suggestions, articles, and other things from various news and media websites.
If you respond to the questions that are pertinent to your business and they are chosen, the news website will link back to you.
8. Ask For The Credit You Deserve
Your website might occasionally be mentioned, but you might not be given due credit.
For instance, even though you give a merchant a good testimonial, they may not provide a backlink to you.
Another example: A popular blog can reference a study that your company released without linking to it.
Both times, because a service was given, your company should get a backlink.
Request a backlink from current clients or consumers that make mention of your brand or company on their websites in any form.
Additionally, if you discover a company using your original investigation, it ought to provide you with a backlink.
Create a Google Alerts or comparable tool to find websites that reference your company.
You will be notified whenever your website is mentioned anywhere on the web.
9. Build Backlinks With Infographics
Infographics have been one of the most often used link-building strategies in recent years. The market for infographics has exploded since 2009.
In the below image from Statista, you can see the most commonly produced marketing content type worldwide in 2020. When a batch of responding marketing professionals was questioned whether they used Infographics, 45% of them responded with a “yes”.
Infographics are regularly published by prestigious magazines like Mashable, The Verge, Huffington Post, and others, and readers adore them. Since infographics are so easily shared, they’re fantastic for generating backlinks and directing traffic from social media.
If you’re not a designer, you can find someone to do it for you on Fiverr for as little as $5. Find skilled designers on Dribbble if you want an infographic that looks better.
You can submit the infographic to some of the well-known infographic directories after you’ve developed it and posted it on your website.
Find people who have previously shared relevant infographics using Twitter or Mention to further spread the word.
You can reach out to people by asking them to view your just published infographic and provide comments. If they liked it, they might link to it and share it on social media.
10. Internal Backlinking
Although internal links won’t significantly improve your website’s SEO, they will help you make it more user-friendly overall. They are also a terrific approach to establishing links using your desired anchor text.
Links from other pages on the same website are referred to as internal links. Internal links are a great tool for channeling authority to the pages that require it, but many SEO experts fail to take use of them, which is a big mistake.
Internal links are completely under your control, unlike external backlinks.
As with any other approach, don’t overuse it and avoid creating more than 100 internal links per page to avoid giving your website a shady appearance.
Here’s a wonderful way to automatically create internal links on your web pages with a free WordPress Plugin called Internal Link Juicer. Install and activate the plugin.
This plugin allows you to set anchor texts for different blog posts. The anchor text you provide for a particular post will automatically be linked to the post whenever that anchor text appears on any other post on your website.
For example: If you have a blog post on “how to start a blog“ and you add an anchor text for this post as “start a blog”, then every time the phrase “start a blog” appears on any other posts, it will automatically be linked to the “how to start a blog” page.
How To Get Backlinks To Your Website: Final Thoughts
The most effective link-building strategies will depend on a variety of variables, including your industry’s level of competition and the authority of your website.
The majority of the aforementioned strategies aren’t particularly innovative or novel, but their effectiveness is what matters. Do not attempt to do them all simultaneously. Start with one, gain insight from it, refine your strategy, and then expand from there.
When wondering about how to get backlinks to your website, it’s a good idea to begin by producing excellent content. From there, you can begin pitching particular pages and experimenting with various strategies.
